A Big-Hearted Festival for the Whole Neighborhood

Mark your calendars, East Oak Lane—Oak Lane Day is back! On Friday, September 20th, neighbors of all ages will gather in the Ellwood Schoolyard and surrounding streets for an unforgettable community celebration full of food, games, music, and pure fun.
The event, organized by the Oak Lane Community Action Association (OLCAA), is being made possible in part thanks to a generous $25,000 grant from Councilmember Anthony Phillips' office—and the incredible partnership of Ellwood Elementary School, led by Principal Davis.
"Principal Davis has been more than just accommodating—he’s been invested in making this happen. He understands the importance of building trust between schools and neighborhoods, and his support has opened the doors for this celebration to take root again."
What Is Oak Lane Day?
For many residents, Oak Lane Day brings back memories of carnival games, dunk tanks, dancing, and the kind of neighborly joy that makes a block feel like a village.
I met my husband at Oak Lane Day over 30 years ago. The firefighters were there. Everyone knew each other. It was the kind of day that reminded you how special it is to live here.”
This year, the goal is simple: bring the neighborhood together for a day of pure, positive energy. While detailed plans are still in the works, the event promises to include activities for kids, adults, and seniors, performances, vendors, and chances for residents to connect beyond their front doors.
Why It Matters
Community celebrations like this one aren’t just about funnel cake and face paint—they’re about belonging. In a time when it’s easy to feel disconnected or overwhelmed, Oak Lane Day offers a joyful way to remind each other: we live here together.
It’s about seeing your neighbor outside of their car or inbox. About kids having fun safely together with other kids from their community. About music in the air and knowing someone is glad you showed up.
